Mining

How is LiDAR used in mining?

Grass Roots Exploration

  • High quality base map
  • Locate historical workings or old roads for easier access
  • Lineament Analysis
  • Determine ice flow direction
  • Map resistant (or recessive) lithologies, faults or veins
  • Locate or follow veins/faults/contacts/dykes even under heavy forest canopy
Advanced Exploration
  • Locate potential drill sites
  • Plan drill access routes
  • Plot accurate drill sections (more likely to get correct interpretation)
  • Archaeology / Environmental studies
  • Locate illegal miners
  • Better topography for geophysics (especially Gravity)
Resource Evaluation
  • Accurate and detailed topo leads to more accurate resource model
Engineering Construction Phase
  • Slope maps / Topo maps / Wet vs Dry soil maps
  • Roads / power line routes
  • Plan Tailings Storage Facilities
Resource Extraction
  • Accurately measure volume of rock removed from pit
  • Measure remaining capacity of tailings storage
  • Measure volume of ore / waste piles

Engineering

How is LiDAR used in Engineering?

LiDAR provides detailed (1 to 10 or more measurements per m2) accurate (+/- 15cm vertical +/-30cm horizontal) digital elevation measurements. This kind of data can be obtained even under heavy forest cover. This data can be used in …

  • Estimate documents
  • Scoping studies
  • Proposal documents (3-D fly through)
  • Engineered plans
  • “As built” confirmation
Rate of change maps …
  • coastline erosion
  • tailing dam change
  • urbanization
  • illegal miners

Digital elevation data can then be processed to develop a number of maps that are very useful. For example some municipalities have bylaws that state only ground less than 3:1 slopes can be developed on. Topo data can be manipulated into slope maps … areas >3:1 vs areas <3:1 slope

Energy

How is LiDAR used for Energy projects?

Precision maps created using digital Aerial Photography and/or LiDAR technology supply important reference information for planners, engineers, conservationists, habitat management and financial institutions providing capital.
Electrical energy generation, either from hydro electric dams or wind generation turbines, must take into account many factors during the planning process. Terrain modeling is necessary to determine ground and vegetation interaction with wind patterns against wind turbines and flood modeling when creating a dam reservoir.
The preservation of fish and wildlife habitat are now recognized as important components of the earth’s ecosystem. Accurate mapping provides a clear examination of rivers and streams as well as vegetation cover and tree density. This allows the planners and engineers to maximize the installation of the energy generating infrastructure while minimizing the impact on the surrounding nature.
Elevation models provided by precise mapping allow for the efficient and cost effective design of access roads as well as hydro power lines and oil or gas pipeline corridors.

Environmental Studies

How is LiDAR used in Environmental Studies?

There are a number of applications for LiDAR / Aerial Photography within Environmental Studies. Forest Environment: LiDAR is capable of penetrating even very thick forest canopies. We are able to image all levels of the forest from the canopy to the small shrubs in the understory. The image to the right shows a typical LiDAR profile view of a forest notice the detail in the tree (trunks - branches - leaves) and in the understory. We are able to produce maps that show vegetation density for any or all intervals. this can be used to model as mammal habitat, carbon sequestration to fire loads. Wetlands: Most LiDAR sensors, including the ones we use, utilize a Near Infra Red (NIR) wavelength of light. NIR is strongly absorbed by water. As such wetlands show up very well on LiDAR imagery. Even small ponds / swamps only a meter or two across will show up. Combined with the topographic data, a very accurate map of the wetlands can be produced. The image above shows how much NIR light has been reflected. There are two swampy areas in the center (dark colors) well drained soils show up as light tones. Creeks/Rivers: LiDAR is able to produce stunning maps that show where channels are, where they will be during high water events, and even where they were in the past. This is very valuable information for people interested in all kinds of aquatic life - fish to dragonfly nymphs.
